Tennis is a game which is played on different kind of surfaces and each surface has its own features. A tennis court can be made with three different types using different materials.

Clay Court

Clay courts are the slowest of the courts. They are made up of crushed stone, red dirt. These courts minimize the effect of skid and produces highest bounce as compared to the other courts. Since, clay courts are slow paced courts, they nullify the advantage of big servers and that is the same reason why Pete Sampras, (one of the tennis greats) who won 14 Grand Slam Titles never won Roland Garros. Due to the slow nature of the court, players with strong baseline game usually dominates clay surface and you can expect long grinding rallies during a match.

Major Tournaments:

Grand Slam – Roland Garros

Masters 1000 – Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome

Grass Court

Grass courts are the fastest of the courts. They are made up of grass. Due to the characteristic of grass and slightly uneven surface, you expect low bounce, high pace and lot of skidding of the ball. Players with big serves, good net play and killer slices are usually more dominant on this surface. Roger Federer has won the most Wimbledon Titles (08) surpassing Pete Sampras’ tally of 07 titles. There are not much longer rallies in the match.

Major Tournaments:

Grand Slam – Wimbledon

Masters 1000 – None

Hard Court

Hard courts are intermediate between clay and grass courts. They are made up of asphalt or concrete. Due to the hard surface, you can predict the bounce of the ball. The speed of the ball is faster than the clay courts but slower than the grass courts. Similarly, the bounce of the ball is more than the grass courts but less than the clay courts. A good server and a good baseliner, both can have success on hard courts.

Major Tournaments:

Grand Slam – Australian Open, US Open

Masters 1000 – Indian Wells, Miami, Montreal, Cincinnati, Shanghai, Paris
